Things to Do in Stocking Island, Great Exuma
Stocking Island lies just across Elizabeth Harbour from George Town, serving as a natural breakwater that creates one of the finest anchorages in the Bahamas. This narrow, three-mile-long island is virtually undeveloped, offering pristine beaches on both the calm harbor side and the Atlantic coast, excellent snorkeling, and one of the Caribbean's most beloved beach bars.
For cruising sailors, Stocking Island represents the social heart of the Exuma winter community. For day visitors, it offers an escape to perfect beaches without the crowds. There are no cars, no paved roads, and no development beyond a handful of beach bars and a small beach rental operation. What Stocking Island does have is some of the clearest water, whitest sand, and freshest conch salad in the Bahamas.
Chat 'N' Chill Beach Bar
DiningThis legendary establishment has been drawing visitors to Stocking Island since 1999. The open-air bar and restaurant sits on a beautiful white-sand beach with volleyball courts, hammocks, and crystalline swimming waters. Fresh conch salad is prepared dockside as you watch, and the Sunday Pig Roast has been a weekly tradition since 2001.
Tip: Feed conch scraps to the friendly stingrays that cruise the shallows near the bar.
Hamburger Beach
BeachNamed for a legendary hamburger shack that once stood here, this beach on Stocking Island's Atlantic side offers excellent snorkeling and beautiful pink-tinged sand. The beach faces the open ocean but remains protected enough for comfortable swimming most days. Walk the trail from Chat 'N' Chill to reach it.
Tip: Bring your own food and water as there are no services on this side of the island.
Blue Hole
NatureA deep inland blue hole on Stocking Island offers adventurous snorkelers a unique freshwater swimming experience. The hole drops more than 100 feet and connects to an underwater cave system. The hike from the beach takes about 20 minutes through coastal scrub.
Tip: The path can be rough; wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water.
Stocking Island Snorkeling
SnorkelingThe waters surrounding Stocking Island teem with marine life thanks to the healthy reef ecosystem. Sea turtles are commonly spotted, along with stingrays, reef fish, and occasional nurse sharks. The best snorkeling is along the island's western shore facing Elizabeth Harbour.
Tip: Bring your own gear or rent from Chat 'N' Chill.
Starfish Beach
BeachThis shallow sandbar area is home to numerous large red starfish visible in the crystal-clear water. The knee-deep water allows visitors to wade among the starfish without disturbing them. Located on the harbor side of the island, conditions are almost always calm.
Tip: Look but do not touch; starfish are sensitive to handling and should remain in the water.
Volleyball at Chat 'N' Chill
Water sportsThe beach volleyball courts at Chat 'N' Chill host ongoing games most afternoons, with cruisers and visitors mixing for casual play. The sandy courts sit right on the beach, and games range from serious competition to friendly rallies. Cold drinks are never far away.
Tip: Show up around 3 p.m. when pickup games typically start.
Hiking Trails
NatureSeveral trails cross Stocking Island, connecting the harbor beaches to the Atlantic side. The main trail from Chat 'N' Chill to Hamburger Beach takes about 20 minutes and passes through native vegetation including sea grape and buttonwood. The paths offer the only way to explore the island's interior.
Tip: Start early to avoid midday heat and bring sun protection.
Sunday Pig Roast
DiningEvery Sunday since 2001, Chat 'N' Chill has hosted a pig roast that brings together cruisers, locals, and visitors for an afternoon of food, music, and community. The slow-roasted pig is served with Bahamian sides, and the party often continues well into the evening.
