Who Founded Hope Town and What Is Its History?

Wyannie Malone arrived on Elbow Cay in 1785 with three of her children: Ephraim, David, and Young Wyannie, who was married to Jacob Adams. Both Ephraim and Jacob had served as Loyalist soldiers in South Carolina before the war's end forced their exile.

The Loyalists were soon joined by migrants from Harbour Island and Eleuthera, older Bahamian settlements that provided experienced islanders familiar with surviving in this challenging environment. Together, these families built a community based on subsistence fishing and small-scale farming.

Hope Town's growth during the nineteenth century was slow but steady, with the economy supplemented by salvaging cargoes from ships that wrecked on Elbow Reef just east of the settlement. This wrecking trade brought both prosperity and controversy until the construction of the lighthouse in the 1860s.

The settlement's narrow streets and pastel-painted clapboard cottages preserve the architectural character of a New England fishing village transplanted to the tropics. Many buildings date to the nineteenth century, with traditional white picket fences and flowering bougainvillea framing the lanes.

Today, the Wyannie Malone Historical Museum preserves the settlement's rich heritage through memorabilia, artifacts, photographs, and documents. Located in a restored historic building, the museum tells the story of Hope Town's founding and the remarkable woman whose determination created this enduring community.
